OUR STORY

Community transport you can trust

GoStart Community Transport is an independent, volunteer-led organisation providing accessible community transport across Sudbury, Suffolk and the surrounding villages.

We exist to support people who may find it difficult to travel due to age, disability, mobility challenges, social isolation, or limited access to public transport. Whether it’s a hospital appointment, a trip to the shops, or a chance to enjoy a social outing, our service helps people stay active, independent, and connected to the world around them.

At the heart of GoStart is a simple goal: to make everyday journeys possible for those who need a little extra support.

Our service is powered entirely by volunteers. Every journey we provide happens because local people generously give their time to help others. Their commitment and compassion are what make GoStart more than just a transport service— they make it a lifeline.

From our strong community roots, GoStart has grown to operate a fleet of five vehicles, including two 16-seater minibuses, an 8-seater minibus, and two 5-seater accessible MPVs. All of our vehicles are fitted with access ramps or lifting platforms, ensuring that passengers who use wheelchairs or may find stepping onto a bus difficult can travel safely and comfortably.

We are proud to have recently expanded our fleet with “Johnny Boy”, our fully electric minibus, named in memory of our founder.

Every journey we make helps someone stay connected, independent, and part of their community.

Our Founder

John Phillips founded GoStart Community Transport after recognising a vital need in the local community. Following his time volunteering with S.T.A.R.T – Sudbury Town Area Rural Transport from 2006 to 2011, John saw first-hand how important accessible transport was for many people.

When the service closed due to a lack of funding, it left a significant gap, particularly for older residents and those with mobility challenges. Determined to make a difference, John created GoStart to ensure people in Sudbury and the surrounding villages could continue to access essential journeys and remain connected to their community.

John sadly passed away in 2024, but his vision lives on through GoStart and the dedicated volunteers who continue his work every day.

Every journey we make is part of his legacy.

John Phillips, Founder of GoStart Community Transport. His vision continues to guide our work today.
